A farmer described as both a Dairyman and a Farm Bailiff who worked at Bluntsea, Whitchurch Canonicorum and Furley/Furleigh, Netherbury.

He was from the local area, born at Broadwinsor and baptised there on 23rd August 1807. On 14th June 1835 he married Anne Slade at Whitchurch Canonicorum when he would have been in his late 20s. By the time he was 33 the 1841 Census shows he was still living at Whitchurch Canonicorum with Ann.

Twenty years later he's listed as a Dairyman and living with Ann at "Bluntsea", Whitchurch Canonicorum and then in 1871 they are recorded in Netherbury, probably near Furleigh.

Ann who was six or seven years older than John died in the second quarter of 1878, when she was 78. Her death was registered in Beaminster and she was buried at St Mary's, Netherbury on 6th May 1878 where she was recorded in the Parish Register of Burials as Ann Pie a resident of Furley, Netherbury.

Later that same year, on 12th November, John remarried. His second wife, recorded in the register as Flora Fursman a Spinster, was some 37 years his junior and a resident of "Furley". John was described as a Widower and a Dairyman also resident at Furley.

In the 1881 Census John and Flora are recorded as living at Furleigh Farm, Netherbury, along with Flora's daughter Emma S Fursman, aged 8, John A Pye (1) and George T Pye (3 months). In 1885 the Netherbury baptismal records show that their family had expanded to include James Richard who was baptised on 11th October with his 78 year old father now recorded as a Retired Farmer's Bailiff. The 1891 Census reveals that there had been two more children added to the family in between George and James with a second daughter, Annie, being born three years before James and Edwin who followed a year later.

Earlier in the year of James' birth (25th March 1885) John had purchased the house that is now Yew Tree Cottages from James Cleall for £145. He made a Will in 1889 leaving the house in trust for Flora to use until her death or remarriage and he died a couple of years later on 17th November 1891, aged 84. He was buried alongside his first wife Anne in Netherbury.
