Betty Hansford was baptised in Loders in 1752 and that is also where she married John Shier in 1776. It is thought they moved to Netherbury in 1784 which is the first year John is recorded as paying 3s 6d on a single plot which is thought to be the shop in Bridge Street which is now part of the house called The Redes.
It is also when John and Betty had their new born daughter Elizabeth and her one year old sister Sophia baptised in St Mary's, on 17th September. Another girl, Anna Hanna, was born on Christmas Eve the following year and she was followed by Harriet a couple of years later in 1787.
John died in 1798 and, although there are gaps in the surviving Land Tax Returns, it would appear that Elizabeth takes over liability for the same plot until 1832 which is the last year for which records survive . She is named as the owner and occupier in the Tithe Apportionment of 1839 along with the neighbouring plot on the corner of Bridge St & what is now St James Rd which it is thought she bought from the estate of Mary Serjeant, probably in 1834. At the time there was a half finished house on the plot which Mary Serjeant had started to build before she died which Betty must have completed. That house is no longer there and the plot has become the lawn and garden of The Redes.
The first proper census in 1841 came after two of Betty's daughter, Sophia & Anna, had married and moved away leaving an 88 year old Betty as head of the household with her two remaining daughters Elizabeth and Harriet. This is also the first mention of the shop because Betty has "Shop M" entered as her "Profession, Trade or Employment".
Betty Shier died on 9th March, 1844 aged 92 and was buried in Loders alongside her husband John.
