Nearly all of the images on this site are scans of original postcards, illustrations or photgraphs. We have attempted to reproduce those originals here as faithfully as possible.
However, many of the originals are now showing signs of age. Modern digital techniques allow us to enhance those images and, in some cases, we have done so. It is important to realise that these "enhancements" can also introduce "detail" that was never there and colours that may look revived and "truer" are not neccesarily the original colours.
We include the "enhanced" versions because they often make it easier to see what you're looking at but it should be borne in mind that they are the result of unintelligent computer algorithms and should not be regarded as more accurate than the original versions. If you can't see something in the original it probably wasn't there.
Thought to be the wedding party for the marriage of Effie Read to Robert Peacock.
In 1985 Frank Read, the son of Herbert and Grandson of William and Elizabeth, wrote in an accompanying letter:
"I think the wedding must have been either Effie Peacock or Lily Hedge the two daughters of my Grandparents, I cannot say which.
The only people that I can identify, are my Uncle George sat on the chair on the extreme left... The litlle girl is probably his eldest daughter Phyllis. Standing next to my Uncle George is my Father Herbert William Read... The next lady and gentleman in the back row are unknown to me, but next... comes my Grandparents."
If the little girl on Uncle George's knee is his daughter Phyllis the photo must have been taken after 1902 when she was born. Lily Hedge was married in 1900 which means this is probably the wedding of William and Elizabeth's youngest daughter Effie which took place on 4th September, 1907.
The photograph was taken outside the front door of the house that is now called The Redes in the middle of Netherbury village.
Many thanks to Allan Harvey who supplied the scan of the original photograph.
